Okay for doing this kind of DIY.

I use a scratch awl that may friend made me for studding vests.
One you can buy in a store looks something like this.
But you could just use a fork, it just takes more force.

Just stretch out the fabric and poke it over and over. Simple, but it takes a stupid long time.
